At least the spring would press the filter to the housing evenly, and as the paper wears the spring will continually adjust towards the housing. Ford Thunderbird 1978 77V - 210 11-21-77 Lincoln Versailles 1978 reduce throttle return rate, or in some cases, may prevent full closure of throttle plate. #3 a spring totally makes sense to press the filter to the housing. #2 might work, at least the gasket would hold a loose filter to the housing, unfortunately my filters top paper is not centered on the filter so the rubber gasket will hold one side but not the other, this might cause the side without paper overhang to lift that side causing a bad seal. The options I've found throughout my forum searches. Some additional to the link that Chris shared. Anyone else using these filters that added a spring, or is it fine without the spring. Currently without the spring the glass is the only thing that presses the filter up which is IFFY. The instructions for installing the filter is pretty clear, but I have seen similar filters with a bottom spring which assists pushing up the filter to produce a better seal. Chances are very, very high that there's garbage in your fuel pump and you'll be rebuilding/replacing that soon, even if it's relatively new (I can't recall all the parts you've thrown at that car since you got on the forum). Seems counterintuitive, but there's some photos on this thread that show it well.Īs far as what's in your tank, I would drop the tank, have it hot tanked to clean it, disconnect and blow the lines out with compressed air both from the tank forward and from the fuel pump side back. If the filter is put on first, then the gasket, the element won't seal to the housing and it'll allow unfiltered fuel to pass through. Maybe the filter was installed improperly.the gasket goes on the metal housing first, then the filter with the side with the ring of holes going toward the metal housing, then the glass. The mesh in the carb is meant to just catch big stuff that would keep the needle from seating. I've been using that style of filter in a number of cars for a long time and I've never had any issues.nothing ever noted on the screen filter at the inlet of the carb (most Holleys, Carters, etc) have a mesh or stone filter at the fuel inlet that looks like a thimble and I've never had any bits of anything plug passages, jets, or the needle/seat. ![]() ![]() Those paper elements are rated down to 10 micron.the smallest the naked eye can see is about 30 micron so nothing in the tank that you can see should've been getting by. I'm very surprised junk was getting past that filter. The fuel filter is inside of a screw on canister that screws onto the fuel pump which is next to the oil filter on the drivers side of the engine.
